Tammy Hembrow is an Instagram sensation with nearly 5 million followers. But why is this? Is it due to the majority of her photos being her half-naked? What has this world come to? Instagram is an application that is used today by various female micro-celebriites as a tool to promote themselves, as their own brand. It seems like for Tammy Hembrow, she likes to promote herself wearing hardly any clothes. What is alarming about these photos that she uploads daily is that young girls at the age of 12 to 14 may be looking at these photos as if it is normal. However, this is certainly not.
Sharing an Instagram is a very simple act and for those that have a strong online presence, it can act as a powerful tool of promotion. This is a clear representation of a curated self due to the use of the in-edit apps.It is micro- celebrities like Tammy Hembrow present this glorified illusion of beauty. he “always-on nature” of social media encourages celebrities and those aspiring to be famous to share constant details of their day-to-day lives. We can see comments on this photo from various publics stating ‘her life is perfect’ or ‘her body is perfect’, but is this her life? or is this just her online self… her curated self?
I think the “always-on nature” of social media encourages celebrities and those aspiring to be famous to share constant details of their day-to-day lives. But is this really appropriate sharing content? I believe these photos should be prohibited from Instagram for the sake of teenage girls well-being. Beauty is so much more than skin deep and that is what this campaign is all about.
I want to know what you guys think, so please comment below if you think this is appropriate or not and why? Do you think this is having a detrimental effect on young girls self-esteem?
